Minnesota State Normandale Community College Partnership Center
New Construction | 2012

Called the Partnership Center because of its academic affiliation with Minnesota State University and Metropolitan State University, this new building on the Normandale Community College campus provides classrooms, office space for the partner institutions, and collegial and study spaces.

The daylighting design helps orient building occupants, with all circulation occurring adjacent to natural light and terminated with natural light and small study areas. All collegial and group study spaces also incorporate natural light and views. Fritted glass on south- and west-facing windows helps minimize uncomfortable heat gain while maximizing views and solar access. Additional strategies to improve the indoor environment include: providing a variety of acoustic conditions – with areas for focused work in addition to areas for social interaction; giving control to occupants through adjustable task lighting, window shading, and adjustable and moveable furniture; and, providing for the latest technology systems, from classroom media systems to building system controls. Through their post-occupancy survey, students reported satisfaction with all surveyed aspects of their classroom environment and indicated that both the overall facility and their primary classroom enhance their learning experience and health.

This project is the winner of the 2017 Best of B3 Indoor Environmental Quality - Classrooms Award.
