M State - Moorhead Transportation Center: Addition and Renovation
New Construction | 2016

An expansion of M State - Moorhead’s automotive and diesel technology programs, the M State Transportation Center is a successful example of incorporating Minnesota’s B3 Guidelines in a project with heavy mechanical, energy, and air quality needs and a limited budget.

With the project encompassing a classroom in addition to automotive and diesel labs, the HVAC systems utilize the existing campus hot water system for heating and digital scroll compressors paired with a variable air volume air handler for cooling. Source-capture exhaust pulls harmful fumes directly from pipes rather than general room exhaust, making the system more efficient and safe. The HVAC systems are tied into the existing campus-wide controls for monitoring and adjusting system performance. Using fully-glazed garage doors helped the project achieve the B3 daylight requirements without additional windows, limiting heat transfer while providing significant natural light. The light levels provided in the labs through this daylight and high-bay LED lighting are further enhanced by a white concrete hardener that reflects light throughout into the space, providing a bright learning and work environment.

This project was a finalist for the 2017 Best of SB 2030 Award.
