New Construction | 2016

The new 3-story, 68,000-square-foot Jason R. Carter Science Education Center at Metropolitan State University provides space to educate Minnesota’s future STEM workforce while demonstrating how a facility can be a net-positive addition to the community, organization, and environment. The building provides on-site learning opportunities for students through photo-voltaic panels with a dashboard for monitoring energy production, landscaping that demonstrates micro-ecosystems and native plants, a geology rock walk, and instrumentation to track water use and waste-water production.

Extensive daylighting studies informed many of the lighting and mechanical strategies, such as widening window openings and raising window head heights, providing manual and motorized window shades, installing daylight sensors with automatic dimming, and selecting light fixtures with good color rendition and low-glare lenses. Indoor environmental quality is also supported through mechanical systems that improve air distribution and ensure adequate ventilation rates while minimizing drafts and noise. Results from a recent post-occupancy survey revealed that students were satisfied with all surveyed aspects of their classroom environment, with the highest scores allocated to daylighting, thermal, and acoustic conditions – categories that are often ranked poorly in occupant surveys.

This project was a finalist for the 2017 Best of B3 Indoor Environmental Quality - Classrooms Award.
