Hamline Station Apartments is a transit-oriented mixed-use development consisting of two, four-story buildings with a total of 108 units of affordable work-force housing and 13,000 SF of retail space.  

The design team used an integrated design approach for the envelope, mechanical, electrical and control systems to achieve the overall energy goals, conducting iterative modifications to the building design based on energy model results. A well-insulated envelope is complemented by energy-efficient lights and mechanical equipment paired with enhanced control. Units have high efficiency packaged heating/cooling units, controlled with programmable thermostats, and Energy Star appliances and equipment. Water-Sense plumbing fixtures reduce the building’s overall water usage and demand for domestic hot water, which is provided by a highly efficient, high-capacity central heating plant coupled with a recirculating pump. The resulting efficiencies are passed directly on to the residents in the form of reduced utility expenditures and increased comfort, easing their cost of living while enhancing the livability of their surroundings. 

This project was a finalist for the 2017 Best of SB 2030 Award.
