The University of Minnesota Mechanical Engineering Building houses classrooms, offices, and teaching and research laboratories. This infrastructure remodel included modernizing the HVAC, electrical, and communications systems, replacing the 60-year-old single-glazed windows, and updating the building to be in compliance with current codes.

The project team faced the challenge of optimizing energy performance to meet SB 2030 standards without upgrades to the building envelope, and maintaining enough flexibility to accommodate undetermined future lab needs. To do this, the team developed a design concept that reorganized the program elements within the existing floor plates so they could be served by an efficient HVAC system without expensive changes to the basic building layout. They devised a spatial strategy that organized the building into low, medium and high intensity air flow zones based on space use, and designed the mechanical system layout for maximum efficiency. Additional energy efficiency strategies included converting from steam to hot water heating, using energy recovery wheels, providing a 100% outside air variable air volume air handling system, incorporating terminal fan coil units with electrically commutated motors, and specifying carbon dioxide controls for ventilation air.

This project was a finalist for the 2016 Best of SB 2030 Award.
