CHS Field is a newly constructed ballpark that is home to the St. Paul Saints. With 80% of its interior spaces located below the concourse, the design significantly reduces the building footprint, requiring less open space and less energy to operate. The design team maximized mechanical efficiency by using VRF heating and cooling for peripheral spaces and CO2 monitoring for space ventilation. Innovative light fixtures focus light on the field, reducing the total number of fixtures by 40%, as well as limiting spill into adjacent areas. The stadium connects to Saint Paul’s district energy system for heating and cooling loads, enabling it to be more efficient while also obtaining a significant percentage of its heating energy from renewable sources. On the electricity side, a 100kW solar array supplies 12.5% of the ballpark’s power. These energy strategies are complemented by other sustainability strategies, from rainwater capture and reuse to a 98% construction and demolition waste diversion rate.

This project was a finalist for the 2018 Best of SB 2030 Award.
