The Mankato Transit Facility is a new 34,000sf bus garage and maintenance facility with a total capacity for 40 buses. Sustainable design was approached holistically and integrated early in project development.

The site selection process resulted in the decision to expand an existing Mankato Public Works facility, leaving the previous transit facility to be repurposed for the local Children’s Museum. By minimizing demolition of existing structures, this decision minimized the total development impact. The building structure uses locally sourced materials and recycled material in a modular precast concrete wall panel system to utilize product efficiencies and reduce waste. Daylighting models helped the design teams optimize the relationship between natural and electric lighting with integrated controls. In addition to energy modeling, the project used utility company incentive-based programs to evaluate energy saving features. High-efficiency boilers, energy recovery, and photovoltaic panels are key components in the energy-efficient building systems.

This project is the winner of the 2018 Best of B3 Design Award and the 2018 Best of SB 2030 Award.
