East Snarr Hall, originally built in 1964, is a three-story residence hall on the campus of Minnesota State University Moorhead. The facility includes 198 student beds, as well community lounges, study spaces, and laundry. By replacing windows, original plumbing, and HVAC and electrical systems, there were plenty of opportunities to meet the project goal of improved energy efficiency. Replacing all windows and curtain walls improved the thermal performance of the building envelope. The mechanical system includes a high-efficiency Variable Refrigerant Flow cooling system coupled with a Dedicated Outdoor Air System with energy recovery. Heating is provided through the campus steam distribution system. All controls were upgraded and the heating pumps were provided with premium efficiency motors and controlled by variable frequency drives to maximize turn-down and efficiency. On the electrical side, best practices like LED lighting and occupancy sensors are complemented by a multi-level energy metering system that enables separately tracking electrical usage by mechanical loads, plug-loads, and lighting.

This project was a finalist for the 2018 Best of SB 2030 Award.
